Diabetes Care
Diabetes mellitus is a lifelong condition caused by a lack, or insufficiency of insulin. Insulin is a hormone – a substance of vital importance that is made by your pancreas. Insulin acts like a key to open the doors into your cells, letting sugar (glucose) in. In diabetes, the pancreas makes too little insulin to enable all the sugar in your blood to get into your muscle and other cells to produce energy. If sugar can’t get into the cells to be used, it builds up in the bloodstream. Therefore, diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels. Excess sugar is also excreted in the urine, hence the practice, in days gone by, of tasting it to diagnose the condition.
There are two main categories of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes tends to occur in childhood or early adult life, and always requires treatment with insulin injections. It is caused by the body’s own immune system destroying the insulin-making cells (beta-cells) of the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes usually develops slowly in adulthood. It is progressive and can sometimes be treated with diet and exercise, but more often Type 2 diabetes may require antidiabetic medicine and/or insulin injections.

Men’s Health
We are acutely aware of the increased interest men are taking in their own health, and aim to provide a comprehensive range of services to match that interest. Specific male issues that relate to the prostate, testicles or erectile dysfunction are issues that are often not easily broached by men and are all too often left unsaid. These can be the cause of needless worry and stress. Most men need to pay more attention to their health. Compared to women, men are more likely to
- Smoke and Drink
- Make unhealthy or risky choices
- Put off regular checkups and medical care
There are also health conditions that only affect men, such as prostate cancer and low testosterone. Many of the major health risks that men face – like colon cancer or heart disease – can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis. Screening tests can find diseases early, when they are easier to treat. It’s important to get the screening tests you need.
Whether it’s testicular cancer awareness in younger men or prostatic issues in older men, we can advise and investigate as necessary. If you are interested in having a well man check simply call reception and book an appointment with a doctor of your choice.

Antenatal Care
The The combined antenatal care programme allows you to be under joint care of your GP and obstetrician during pregnancy. This is internationally recognised as the best and most convenient form of ante-natal care. Visits to Scally McDaid Roarty Medical Practice that are related to the pregnancy are free of charge once the HSE application form is completed in the practice. Ideally you should visit one of our doctors as soon as you discover you are pregnant. We will then refer you to your local maternity hospital where you will be seen before 20 weeks for assessment, blood tests and a scan. Subsequently your visits will alternate between the hospital and GP and become more frequent as your pregnancy progresses.
